I finished my Deuce roadster in late winter of 2007, with the idea of going to as many of the cool ’32 Birthday happenings as I could! Man, did I ever have fun!!!!! First, a few details on the car. It’s a fenderless ’32 Ford roadster, with a rumble seat (candy burgundy), American Torquethrust II w/Hooziers front & rear (biggies & littlies) Wescott body, SOCAL frame (#10), Pete & Jakes front end, Currie 9” Ford rearend, Sid Shavers top (tan), tan interior, big ’32 headlights, 3 ½ gal. Moon tank, Unisteer rack and pinion, and a 350 Chevy (330 horse) w/ a 700R4. I showed the car for the first time at the “Oldies Drags” at Firebird, and was floored to receive the “New Crew Pick”. I entered the car at the “Northwest Motorfest” and was “Kenny’s Rod Shop, Sponsor Pick”. Totally unexpected! I want you to understand I did not start out to build a “show winner”, just a nice street rod. This past August I put my yellow steelies w/wide whites on and took the roadster to Bonneville for “Speed Week” and for some “sunrise shots”. The car looked right with the skinny tires on the salt and I got some great shots! When I was leaving the salt, at the end of the day, a helicopter that had been running the course all day was coming at me (right on the deck) and just as it got to me the pilot spun around and the video camera operator was hanging out the left side of the chopper and was shooting me. So of course I had to take‘er up to a hundred or so. The pilot swung around in front of me and I put my hand out with the peace sign and he cleared the front of the car and swung back to my left and disappeared. I wish I knew who those guys were, that would be a cool video to have. The week after Bonneville I put the “hot rod rubber” back on and took the little car to the “Monterey Historic Races” at Laguna Seca. Great fun. Driving up “Highway 1” after the races I had a new Ferrari “F-430” come up alongside and give me a thumbs up (I returned the favor), and another mile or two later a Lamborghini “Giulardo” came up and the passenger waved and gave me the “hang loose” sign (I nodded and gave him a thank you with a big thumbs up). Car guys are car guys no matter what you drive!! The week after Monterey I had the roadster entered at the “Goodguys West Coast Nationals” in Plesanton. I spent three fantastic days at the “Alameda County Fairgrounds” with 3500 of the most beautiful hot rods, and street machines you’ve ever seen!! The Monday before the “Goodguys” show the organizers had invited as many of the rodders as possible to show up at the host hotel (in Plesanton) and cruise together to Sacramento and a few shop tours (about 50 miles away). Well, about 200 of us left the hotel around 9:00 that morning and drove together to Sacramento Vintage Ford. What a sight that was! Three weekends strung together in succession and I DROVE the roadster every mile. A few of my buddies were giving me a bad time about driving the car so far. “What about breaking down, what about rock chips, What about weather, what about tickets?” You know something guys, YA JUST GOTTA DRIVE’EM. I got back home, with no mechanical problems, no chips, perfect weather the whole trip, and most importantly no tickets! You guys do a great job!!!!!!!!!!!! Merry Christmas, Ken Appleby |
