Gone Racin'...to the Automobile Club of Southern California
NHRA 2006 Finals

Story by Richard Parks

The fans got their money's worth at the Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals at Pomona, California, on November 9-12, 2006. Melanie Troxel had carved out a huge lead in Top Fuel, only to see her teammate, Tony Schumacher, fight and claw his way back to the final victory over a disheartened Doug Kalitta. Kalitta had what appeared to be an insurmountable lead going into Sunday's showdown. Schumacher had to win two rounds more than Kalitta, and set a national record on the stingy track, and worse, the weather showed unseasonably warm weather. Schumacher was indeed blessed by the quarter-mile Deities, as the track cooled down, Troxel beat Kalitta to end his chances to win outright, crew chief Alan Johnson and the super skilled Army Team put Tony in the position to stage the upset. With nerves of steel honed by previous championships, Tony blasted to victory over Troxel in the record time of 4.428 at 327.98, squeezing the championship away from Kalitta by a mere 14 points.

John Force left little doubt that he is still the "King of the Funnies," winning his third race of the year and capturing the season's championship over teammate Robert Hight, with Eric Medlen taking 4th place in the points race. Ron Capps gave it a valiant effort but dropped to 3rd in the overall standings, 21 points out of 2nd and 134 points from ousting Force. John used a holeshot advantage to get by Jack Beckman in the finals, for his 122nd National Event victory.  In Pro Stock, Greg Anderson beat his teammate, Jason Line, to win another "Wally." Line had already accumulated enough points to win the season's championship and give the Anderson/Line team first and second place in the Pro Stock Division by a very comfortable margin. Craig Treble won the Pro Stock Motorcycle class at this year's race, while Andrew Hines celebrated by capturing his 3rd straight championship, edging Antron Brown by a mere 23 points, with Angelle Sampey coming in third, only 100 points behind Hines.
