The Return of the “SUPER CAMARO” Funny Car is back ...Pirrone & Ellershaw Racing along with Al Liebmann will be campaigning a 1970 tribute version as part of the newly created "Classical Nitro AA/FC" group with the FRANTIC FORD AA/FC doing long smokey burnouts, dry hops & side by side racing just like in the era of 1970's of funny cars. The Super Camaro features a start of art new nostalgia funny car chassis along with a period looking fiberglass body with all the latest safety equipment making them legal to run at all NHRA & IHRA tracks.
A little history on the original Super Camaro came out of a partnership between Ray Gallagher and Perry Wyatt from Detroit area. The construction began in 1968. Tom Smith of Wolverine Chassis was contracted to construct the Super Camaro. Perry Wyatt built the all steel 427 Chevrolet Engine and the Hemi-Torqueflight Automatic Transmission as well has the Nine-inch Ford rear end with a 4:56 Ring & pinion. Using a low rise Hilborn four port injector on top of a Chet Blazik prepped 6-71 Blower to feed Nitro Methane into it. The chassis was suspended front and rear with Ladder Bars out back and Coil overs up front. Rear wheels were American Bear Claws with Five-Spoke Americans up Front. Construction delays prevented the Super Camaro from hitting the Track until the Spring of 1970. At which time , it was basically "obsolete"...Racing mainly at Detroit Dragway, Milan, Motor City, US.30 in Gary,In. plus one trip the Kansas City, Missouri , the Super Camaro ran a best of 7:[email protected] !
Thanks to Perry Wyatt Jr. for allowing us to bring back a part of Detroit Funny Car history with a tribute to his dad and the name
