Every year Austin is host to the South By South West Music and Art Festival (SXSW). This year one of the features of the Festival is a Dual Media look into the life and art of the late "Big Daddy" Ed Roth, famous early days car painter and creator of fiberglass custom cars. The art gallery next door to Austin's famous Continental Club hosted an exhibit that consisted of numerous Ed Roth original works (mostly pen & ink drawings) and a very unique display where various automotive artists (pin stripers, painters, illustrators, etc) were all given a 16" tall mannequin of Big Daddy's most famous creation, The Rat Fink, and told to do whatever they wanted to bring out the very essence of Ed Roth. The results are totally incredible! On hand at the exhibit were Ilene Roth, Ed's wife and Ron Mann, who directed a film biography of Ed that opened in Austin. The film, a multimedia laughfest, not only gives the viewer a look into the very fertile mind and imagination of Ed Roth, but is also a window into the '50's and '60's that brings back memories of those times much like "American Graffitti" did. If it comes to your area, don't miss it. - Richard "Too Low" Haas
