The 15th Annual Owens Valley Cruisers Fall Colors Car Show in Bishop, CA. was a great adventure. First, it’s in Bishop, CA. where natural beauty and outdoor recreation are king. The nearest major city is an hour away. Most of the pre-1974 hot rods came from 3 to 5 hours away. About 25% of the cars have Nevada plates. Pat Steenken drove his Chevy powered, ’54 Chevy pickup truck from the State of Maryland!!
Registration took place Friday afternoon in a large parking lot at the north end of town. Hanging out and cruising Main Street went on until about 10:00pm. Saturday morning began early at the Tri-County Fairgrounds where 300+ street rods, classics, customs, and trucks found a place to park. The Lions Club provided a great pancake and sausage breakfast. Inside one of the buildings a very nice Arts & Crafts Show was going on. Many participants and spectators visited the unique “Choo Choo” swap meet which took place just outside the car show. About 3:00pm, locals and visitors start putting their chairs up along Main Street to watch the “Cruisin’ Parade” of 200 cars. This was quite a spectacle!! Your day was not over yet. At 7:00pm, Hot Rodders returned to the Fairgrounds Auditorium for the Raffle & Dance. The dance theme was “Dancing with the Cars” with ‘50s, ‘60s & Country music by the popular band “Route 66”.
Sunday morning, after coffee & donuts, cars & drivers began the famous “Fall Colors Poker Run”. Contestants drove to the high country for breathtaking sights of the area’s fall colors. Around noon the Awards Ceremony was presented at the Fairgrounds. Participants also received a goodie bag, mug, dash plaque, & a T-shirt!
