RICKY WELLS, 16, WINS FIRST INDUSTRY SPEEDWAY CYCLES FEATURE
By Tim Kennedy

Industry, CA., July 9, 2008- Ricky Wells, a 16-year old Under 21 National Champion in speedway motorycle racing, won his first 500-cc Division 1 four-lap main event Wednesday night in front of more than 700 spectators at Industry Speedway. Round ten of the season on The Grand arena dirt track in the Industry Hills Expo Center produced the initial first-time winner this year. Wells, from Yorba Linda, started from the fourth gate and trailed gate one starter Buck Blair for two laps. Wells made a sensational pass on the inside of a surprised Blair exiting turn four and led the final two laps. He edged Blair by one length.

The teenager, who raced for two weeks in England earlier this season, earned about $600, including $256 as his share of the weekly 50/50 raffle. Blair, as did Wells, scored eight points to tie for high point honors during preliminary heat races. Each rider had two victories and one second place. Eddie Castro, making his first start of the year following an injury, came from gate two to finish the feature a close third, three lengths behind Blair. Point leader Charlie Venegas, from gate three, ran fourth all four laps. He had won four features in a row and eight of nine mains at Industry this season.Shawn McConnell started from gate five and dropped out on the first lap with a mechanical problem.

Six sidecar teams present were divided into two preliminary heats and four teams advanced to a four-lap feature, run in a clockwise direction versus counter-clockwise for the speedway cycles. Joe Jones and his sidecar swingman Jimmy Olsen led only the final lap. They beat the Dave Alexander/Matt Davis team. The team of brothers Dan and Chris Jones led the first two laps, but stalled in the third turn on lap 3 and collected the second place team of Scott and Sean Driggers. With both teams stunned briefly, the referee concluded the race at that point and awarded victory to the Jones/Olsen team.

Allen Doss, of Riverside, led all four laps in the 500-cc Division 2 main for his first feature win of this season. He won his first main last year. Rookie Tim McGrath, of San Gabriel, won his second 500-cc Division 3 feature in his 12th race. He started second in a six-rider field and passed Chris Thomas, the first three laps leader, on the final lap. McGrath used an inside move leaving turn four to the finish line to win by one length over Thomas. Austin Novratil, a 13-year old from Huntington Beach, led all four laps in a four-rider youth main on 250-cc cycles. Rocco Scopellite, 12, also from :Huntington Beach, won the youth main for less experienced riders. Nicky Reimer, 9, from Seal Beach, won another pee-wee main on his 50-cc Honda mini cycle.

Wells and Venegas led all the way in the two semi-final races that advanced the first two finishers in each semi to the feature. Blair led all four laps in the last chance four-lapper to earn the final berth in the feature. Venegas won the four-lap, four-rider last of the Mohicans--Last Man Out--race. The last place rider is eliminated after lap one and again after lap two, setting up a two lap race for the two

remaining riders. After Neil Facchini and Castro were eliminated, McConnell and Venegas were at the starting gate for a two lap dash when McConnell's JAWA cycle developed a mechanical problem handing the Mohican cash to Venegas. Speedway cycle racing continues every Wednesday beginning at 7:00 pm until mid-September. The track is located at 16200 Temple Ave., between Azusa Ave and Hacienda Blvd, in the City of Industry..
