HICKS WINS FOURTH SPEEDWAY CYCLE MAIN AT INDUSTRY SPEEDWAY
By Tim Kennedy

INDUSTRY, CA., Jul. 29 Gary Hicks became the Industry Speedway Division 1 speedway cycle rider with the most main event victories this season late Wednesday night on his 500cc JAWA cycle. The 40-year old star from Ventura won his fourth feature in week ten at The Grand arena of the Industry Hills Expo Center. He broke his tie with triple winners Billy Janniro and Charlie Venegas. Hicks got the hole shot from lane four of five and led the first lap closely over Janniro, who had won all three of his heat races and his semi-final race for a perfect 16 points.

Jimmy Fishback took second position from high-riding Janniro on lap 3 and finished 15-yards behind Hicks. Mike Faria took third place from Janniro on lap 4. Janniro and Shawn McConnell completed the top five. Fishback earned his main event berth by winning the “last chance race” over Tommy Hedden, from Auburn, Bobby Schwartz and Charlie Venegas. Fishback also drove for the second time in a sidecar race. He and his sidecar rider, Dave German, split exciting heat race victories with the Dave Alexander/Matt Davis team and then won the 4-lap feature trophy in another close contest with Alexander/Davis.

Austin Novrati. 14, from Huntington Beach, won his third 500cc Division 2 feature. Brian Alexander, 51, from Thousand Oaks, won his second 500cc D-3 (rookies) feature at The Grand. A field of six, including one female, participated in the 200cc Junior Division main event. Nicky Reimer, 10, from Seal Beach, won his fourth Junior series trophy of 2009. Newcomer Kale Fredholm, 11, captured the 4-lap pee-wee race for the first time in a field of eight that included two female youngsters.

Ron Mongenel, a D-3 rider from Covina, fell hard entering the third turn on lap 1 of his second heat race. He and his JAWA cycle tumbled and rolled along the dirt track. Mongenel remained on the ground for about five minutes receiving medical attention. The popular ex-truck racer at Irwindale and three-year speedway cycle racer, known as Rocket Ron, was taken on a gurney to the pits. He received treatment from L. A. County Fire paramedics for an injury to his right leg/knee; and was transported to Kaiser Permanente Hospital in Baldwin Park.
