The 1939 Cadillac Series 60 Special was part of an upper-class distinction at Cadillac, and so they get treated with care. But rarely are you going to find this level of survivor. We're told this was with the original family for nearly 75 years, and you will be hard-pressed to find a piece of this classic that isn't original.
General Motors had some of the best-looking bodies around in the late 1930s, and Cadillac was the cream of the crop. Its handsome wide flowing fenders and cool bullet-shaped headlights give it a flowing presence. And the grille design could be used as a definition of art deco. The brightwork is quite complete, and on a car like the 60 Special, it also highlights the best details. The rocker trim shows off the deleted running boards; the big chrome bumpers have an etched Cadillac script, and the smooth wheel covers have a golden Cadillac crest at the center. The black paint shows all the right signs of being original. It has an impressive aged-in kind of style that looks good while you get to tell the story of how this was purchased new in October of 1938 - just as the new 1939 models were hitting the streets. And the owner was so proud that it stayed in his family until 2013.
Luxury in a 1930s car was all about going broad - broad doors, broad space, and broadcloth. The interior looks and feels exceptionally original. The detailed upholstery, smooth wood veneer, good carpeting, complete headliner, and overall preservation is impressive. And the steering wheel is pure classic detailed elegance. These Cadillacs were built to last, but none of the craftsmen at the factory expected the window lamination to stay intact or panels to not fade over 80+ years. So not everything is perfect. But we bet you see this the same way we do. It's only original once. This feels like a rolling time capsule, and the level of preservation is impressive and deserves to be shared.
With so much originality thus far, it's great to see such an honest and likely original powerhouse. This 346 cubic-inch flathead V8 was the envy of big-time movers for the pre-war era. This one keeps with this car's full authentic presentation, right down to the generator. These were hardy motors that would go on to power WWII tanks, and so this robust powerhouse remains a terrific runner today. It's backed by a three-speed manual transmission that has a smooth action so that you can get the most out of the V8 without taking away from the classic luxury driving nature.
The sale comes complete with the original owner's manual and service manual. This Cadillac sedan is a rare treat with an exceptionally authentic style. So if you want to be the center of attention, hurry up and call now!
