This 1970 Chevrolet C10 stepside has that attraction where it has done more than just an honest day's work...it has done an honorable day's work. The history on this one has it used at the Florence National Cemetery, and there is even interesting paperwork to back it up. It makes for an honest pickup that has one of the best stories around.
The paperwork has this as a COPO Chevrolet. While that usually means ultra-rare and big-power muscle cars, it is just for any unique order, including a special paint and fleet order for the General Services Administration. So the history we were given with this one is that the consignor's father purchased this in the 1970s from the groundskeeper for the National Cemetery in Florence, SC. That's some of the most honest and honorable services a truck can do, and so we're quite happy to see this one looking so stock and correct. The bed is now steel, and it was repainted in the last 40 years, but the overall impression is a classic patina that has been given dignity without flair. So the most fashionable piece you're likely to point out is how the white bumpers match the stock hub caps.
Like the exterior, the interior has plenty of patina and a stock style, and any upgrades are well-integrated. For example, the seat and floor cover have the proper classic pickup robust appearance, but the feeling is far fresher than anything from the 1970s. A government truck means no radio or any fancy equipment. Just a working heater to warm your hand's in-between jobs outside. It's an overall honesty you can feel in this truck, right down to the texture of the steering wheel.
The engine bay keeps the stock and workman attitude. The 230 cubic-inch inline-six is an era-correct block with a useful appearance. So while we all know that Chevy's big blocks will fit in this ample engine bay, that's not the point of owning this one. It's simple, correct, and stout - just like the best pickups once were. You take control of the motor with the classic action of the column-shifted three-speed manual transmission, and it gives you that unbeatable vintage easy cruising feel. Overall, it's a good cruiser with the right bit of driver-quality character.
The sale comes complete with a government manual, factory buildsheet, and what appears to be the correct COPO order form. This trunk is not a hero, but we can't help but admire an honest pickup that properly served heroes. Call now!
