This beautiful 1968 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 RS is a great example of a rare and authentic original matching numbers first generation Camaro. It was certified by Camaro expert Jerry MacNeish of Camaro Hi-Performance on January 3, 2023. As certified, it retains its original VIN tag, original hidden VIN in the upper cowl area, original trim tag, original color combination, original engine, original transmission, original rear end and many original parts. In 1968 a total of 7,199 Chevrolet Camaro Z28’s were built. Of those, roughly 20% were equipped with the (RS) – Rally Sport Package which makes this example highly collectable. As the original trim tag indicates this car was built on the second week of December 1967 which makes it a very early car. Early production 302 emblem Z28’s are rare and more desirable than the later production Z28’s. It was ordered with a (Y-2) Butternut Yellow with black racing stripes exterior, (712) black standard bucket seat interior, (AO1) – tinted glass, (CO8) –vinyl roof cover, (D55) – center console, (G80) – positract axle w/ 4.10 ratio, (J52)- power disc brakes, (M21) – 4-speed manual transmission, (N34) – wood steering wheel, (U17)- special instrumentation, (Z22) – rally sport equipment and (Z28)- special engine and equipment package. From the information gathered this car came from California before making its way to the east coast. It was purchased in 1988 by a gentleman named Scott Brehm who lives in Florida. Scott understood how special this car was and wanted to restore it back to its glory days. His plan was to restore the car as correctly as possible so he connected with Jerry MacNeish of Camaro Hi-Performance for guidance. Once the restoration was completed in 1991 Scott enjoyed the car for the next three years before selling it in 1994. Scott Breham and Jerry MacNeish are still very friendly today. The original Hemmings Magazine from April 1994 with the car listed for sale is included. The car was purchased by a gentleman named Michael Williams who lives in Delaware. Michael wanted to take the car to an even higher level both cosmetically and mechanically so he also connected with Jerry MacNeish of Camaro Hi-Performance to do all the work. Jerry started working on everything in March of 2003 and finished in February of 2005. Michael invested a total of $14,844.35 which is documented with invoices that are included. The car was entered into a judging competition through the Vintage Chevrolet Club of America (VCCA) where it achieved a Junior, Senior and Preservation Award. This car was purchased by MS CLASSIC CARS in July of 2022 where it has been on display until now – January of 2023.
The exterior of this car is in beautiful condition especially considering it was restored over 30 years ago. During the restoration the only sheet metal that required replacing was the hood and half quarters. The hood was replaced with a new old stock (NOS) hood. The body is very straight with great gap lines throughout. The hood, doors and trunk lid close very nicely. The car was re-finished in its original color of Butternut Yellow with black racing stripes. The lacquer paint still shows very nicely. The paint was recently detailed to a show quality shine by the team at MS CLASSIC CARS. The car has been outfitted with a new black vinyl top as it originally left the factory in Los Angeles, CA. Everything on the exterior was restored or replaced such as all the glass, stainless trim, wiper arms, driver’s side mirror, headlights, grill, front bumper, door handles, tail light bezels, tail light lenses, gas cap and rear bumper. The car sits on original dated DF wheels and trim rings. The wheels are wrapped with new Goodyear Wide Tread GT E70-15 tires that were added by MS CLASSIC CARS.
The interior is also in beautiful condition throughout. It was restored correctly in its original color of black. It’s equipped with standard bucket seats, center console and gauges. It’s also equipped with the original 6000 rpm redline 7000 rpm tachometer. The wood steering wheel that’s in the car was the one prior to the restoration and is believed to be original to the car. Everything in the interior was restored or replaced such as the headliner, dash pad, dash hardware, steering column, door sills, door panels, door hardware, center console, seats and carpeting. It has the correct style rubber floor mats. Everything in the interior is in working order such dome light, gauges, horn and heating system. The original tachometer RPM is off slightly and the built in clock doesn’t work. The trunk compartment was also restored correctly throughout including the trunk splatter paint. It’s equipped with the jacking instructions stickers, full spare, tools and trunk mat.
The engine compartment is nicely detailed throughout with many correct parts. It was completely restored and painted in the correct color of black. The hidden VIN number in the upper cowl area is original and authentic. The car is powered by the original matching numbers 302 V8 engine that was factory rated with 290 horsepower. The engine was completely rebuilt by Jerry MacNeish of Camaro Hi-Performance which is documented with invoices. The engine has a V1127MO Assembly date, 678 block casting, cast K187 and VIN stamped on deck. It’s equipped with many original parts such as the #4053 Holley carburetor dated 7A1 , #1111266 distributor dated 7G20, #8367 Delco starter motor dated 7J25 and #1100814 alternator dated 7H10. The engine is cooled by an original OD radiator tank dates L of 1967. It has the original fan clutch and fan blade which is unique to Z28 option. The engine sounds awesome through the factory manifolds and dual exhaust system. The engine is coupled to the original matching numbers Muncie 4-speed manual transmission that shifts nicely through the gears. The transmission has a P8S22 assembly date, #660 case and VIN stamped on top of case. The original Muncie speedometer hole is stamped out below the windshield wiper on firewall which is factory original and correct. The power is transferred to the original matching numbers 12-bolt positract rear end with 4.10 gears. The rear end has a BV0912G2 assembly date and #860NF casting date I57.
The undercarriage is also nicely detailed throughout with many correct parts. The original floors are in very good condition and were painted in the correct color of black. Everything was replaced or restored including the steering components, suspension system, braking system and fuel system. It has the original GM four leaf springs in the rear which is standard with the Z28 option in 1968. It also has the original #9078 brake booster dated 095 of 1967 and the original #5460346 master cylinder stamped “WT”.
