Description:
1937 Ford Deluxe Tudor Sedan
For consignment, a 1937 Ford DeLuxe Tudor sedan that has been in the same family since its purchase on December 10, 1936. Our consignor decided to hot rod the car and has done many modifications and per his information, the build has less than 1,000 miles on it.
Exterior
Ford boasted their new streamline design and in 1937, that meant a slightly canted V-shaped grille, wide flowing fenders, and a rounded roof that allowed the air to spill off the back. Two stage Sapphire Blue covers the car, maybe a darker and modern interpretation of Washington Blue, the single stage blue available in 1937. A light blue pinstripe runs the shoulder line and dips with the descension of the tail. Out back, a large trunk lid is hinged on top, flanked by small round taillights and topped by a divided rear window. In profile, the cabin is tall and finds its foundation in the wide running board, while metal trim on the engine cover vents adds forward leaning visual interest to the front. Teardrop headlights ride close to the grille and allow the fenders to articulate wide over the 15-inch Cragar SS wheels with 70 series tires. The metalwork and paint are excellent and a few chips in the paint were the only imperfections we could find.
Interior
Stitched cloth pleats meet smooth gray cloth on the doors with a billet backed armrest and door pull. The doors are in good shape with some discoloration on the carpeted lower panels. The cloth bucket seats in front sit tall on their bases and are low backed, vinyl framed examples. The pleated pattern of the door and seats is replicated in the back on the walls and the bench seat, all in fine condition. A Lecarra steering wheel is mounted on a billet column and fronts a body colored dashboard from Bitchin Products housing white faced AutoMeter and VDO retro gauges and to the right, an AM/FM/Cassette unit. A tall shifter rises from the floor which is covered with tan low pile carpet in good shape. Lokar provides the shift boot and the foot pedals. The headliner is in excellent condition and the massive trunk is finished in gray materials, including a spare cover.
Drivetrain
Behind the engine cover, we reveal the 350ci V8 with an Edelbrock intake and 4-barrel carburetor, along with a number of polished components. Behind it, a 3-speed TH350 automatic transmission sends power to the Ford Granada 8" axle in back and power brakes are onboard with discs in front and drums in the rear. Our consignor also states that power steering was added in 2022.
Undercarriage
Driver quality underneath with surface rust mostly around the springs and rear axle, a few drops of oil on the flywheel cover, and general patina on a car that is 87 years old, beyond the Fatman frame. Dual exhaust flows into stock style mufflers before exiting with chrome tips out the back. A Mustang II front suspension is present along with a rack and pinion from a Mustang per our consignor. Leaf springs handle the back.
Drive-Ability
Quite a change from the original 1937 interiors but a welcome and comfortable cabin when piloting the 350 powered sedan. It rolls out smoothly and we're on older tires so keeping it light as we check functionality on the car which turns out to score high with the only thing not working are the windshield wipers. All other functions operate. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
Having a classic car with an updated drivetrain, electronics, (including Ron Francis wiring), and interior is the dream! From the outside, only the mag wheels and dual exhaust hint of a deviation from 1937, and the exterior is otherwise true to this family's view they've been seeing since 1936! It's a good running small block with more power than they could have dreamed about in '37, and this is one great way to get to a car show!
