Description:
1973 Ford F350 Super Camper 2wd Long Bed Pickup
For consignment, a 1973 Ford F350 Super Camper 2 wheel drive long bed pick up truck with a title verified 111,337 actual miles. According to our consignor, a California truck originally, with a gross vehicle weight of 8,350 and and 8 foot bed. "Whichever model you choose," wrote Ford in 1973, "a gleaming bright grille and front bumper are standard."
Exterior
Indeed, a gleaming grille and bumper faces us, this time with black inserts that make the bold grille frame pop as they carry the marker lights above the headlights, a configuration that would hang around until 1978 when the marker was moved below. Meanwhile, Candy Apple Red covers this long truck like an adult version of a vintage Radio Flyer and a ribbon of body trim runs parallel with the wide rocker panel trim which connects the wheel opening pieces. The truck is decidedly square with vertical ends that include a Ford stamped tailgate and wide, diamond steel rear bumper. Big windows and narrow pillars allow light to stream in the cab and allow views into the bed, which has clean sides but shows some usage on the bed floor. 16-inch Moto Metal wheels present nicely and wear LT rated street tires which is where you might want to keep it because the metal, glass, and paint are spectacular and we could not find any glaring exterior flaws.
Interior
The black plastic door panel is nicely done, tidy, clean, and just fancy enough. Inside, a dark red bench seat has cloth inserts in a vinyl base and is in good shape other than a few tears on the passenger seat bottom. Your basic cross spoke steering wheel shares the column with the shifter and front a simple, no frills dash that relays pertinent information to the driver while A/C controls and an AM/FM/CD radio sits to the right. There's some fading to the plastic metallic frame of the dash adding a touch of patina while the dash pad and red painted backing is great. A textured brown mat protects the floor and a clean, black vinyl headliner is up above in fine condition.
Drivetrain
We lift the top of the box off and reveal a very clean Ford Blue 390ci V8 with a 2-barrel carburetor and a C6 3-speed automatic transmission behind it. Power goes all the way back to the rear axle where it encounters a Dana 70 with 4.10 gears. Power brakes are found front and rear with a disc/drum configuration.
Undercarriage
Getting down on the floor and looking up, we note driver quality conditions on the underside with plenty of surface rust, some area of oil spray, and some flaking rust on an inner body panel, but nothing of major concern here. This is a stout underside with a beefy frame and husky components including radius arm and coil spring suspension in front and leaf springs in the back. Dual exhaust is provided here with Flowmaster mufflers and tailpipes that exit behind each rear wheel.
Drive-Ability
The simplicity of the interior makes it a welcoming place from which to pilot this long ride and the large percentage of glass makes visibility top notch. The 390 delivers good power and acceleration is quite good. The ride is flat and smooth and turn in is what's expected but not with the amount of body roll you might expect, the big truck remains well planted. For functionality, we note the heater blower does not work, the reverse lights do not light up and the A/C has been removed. Other than that, all functions work as they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
This classic American beauty is ready for ranch, road, or show reveal. It's clean and bright and capable like a few of my co-workers, but more likely to get compliments at the gas station. It is a nicely sorted truck with a wonderful presence and an uncommon Super Camper package. Pick up the phone if this pickup is of interest and let us know!
