Description:
1965 Ford Falcon Deluxe Futura Station Wagon
For consignment, a 1965 Ford Falcon station wagon showing 98,679 unverifiable miles. 12,548 four door Falcon Deluxe station wagons were built in 1965 and we can't remember the last time we've seen one here at the mall. This one presents with a great combination of originality with some minor upgrades including two stage paint and wheels. Suit up and let's take a trip to inner space.
Exterior
The Silver Blue Metallic roof of the wagon seems to hover above the car as it's all window below with polished frames in silver which lightens the greenhouse over the straight shouldered of the long body. That long body is augmented by a dark blue spear that ascends gradually from the rear of the car all the way to the nose where it's pointed polished tip streaks back to surround the ribbon of blue. The trim is carried to the tailgate as a simple ribbon between two rounded tail lights with crosshatches and reverse light in the bullseye position. The fantastic flat roof now has a third brake light along with a series of roof rails that rise slightly from the blue plain. Shiny D-pillars hold the back corner and nearly match the reflection of the bumper below. Up front, the standard Falcon face includes a graceful indentation in the hood fronted by a small ornament. 15-inch American Racing Legend series wheels in argent gray look great on the car and wear 195/65R15 tires with an early 2022 date code. Imperfections include a linear ding, and some bodywork chips, painted over.
Interior
Handsome doors combine the two shades of blue in numerous panels and patterns constructed of vinyl and plastic. Same with the front and rear bench seats where stitched dark blue vinyl inserts are surrounded by smooth, lighter blue in very good condition. From the steering wheel forward, it's remarkably clean and original looking, its horizontal speedometer flanked by round gauges and an AM radio embedded in the center band of the dash, which spans the width. Underneath, an FM tuner has been added and a well done electric window control console with cupholders mounted on the transmission hump and looks almost like it came with the car. Blue loop style carpet covers the floor and shows some patina as does the visor and headliner, both fully intact. In the cargo area, a large flat area of inner space, covered in carpet and ready to be loaded for today's picnic.
Drivetrain
In the engine bay, we find a clean 289ci V8, carbureted and backed by a C4 3-speed automatic transmission that sends power to the Ford 8" rear with 2.80 gears. Unassisted drum brakes are in front and back. Gold valve covers and air cleaner case make this otherwise stock looking engine pop a bit.
Undercarriage
Pleasantly clean underneath, uniformly black with a dual exhaust carrying a pair of stainless steel mufflers before exiting just under the rear bumper. Components are clear of grease and we're not seeing any dripping oil or even residual coatings, even though our consignor states there is a small transmission leak. Suspension consists of coil springs in the front and leaf springs in the back.
Drive-Ability
Once a great little family hauler, now a classic wagon that stands out from the dozens of Falcons we see each year. Straight forward 60's styling leads to a comfortable cab with good visibility all around. The 289 comes to life with authority and pulls this sled onto the test loop with adequate power and this tire and wheel set up is just right, allowing for straight tracking and very good handling for a long car. We find only the reverse lights don't work, but all other functions do and we noted a noise in the engine when cold that may be top end related. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
This is a tidy little wagon, well sorted, great paint and interior, and a fine V8. And in the world of collector cars, wagons are still cool and consistently attract a crowd, whether it's here at the mall, on the street, or at your local car show. Peering into our crystal ball, I think it's safe to predict this smart car won't be with us very long. If it strikes your fancy, as it does ours, make the call today.
