Description:
Buying a classic that has already been customized is always a bit of a double-edged sword because you acquire someone else's vision. It means you have to put up with the customizer's decisions, unless you decided to change them and this exactly what this owner was planning to do with this sexy 1960 Ford Galaxie. He had great plans for it, but then unexpected health challenges put all efforts to a hold. And now, he made the hard decision to give in and let this project go because he can't do this Galaxie any justice. But maybe you can.
The owner saw this Galaxie 2 years ago at a car show and fell head-over-heels in love with it, but it took him another year to track its owner down and get his hands on it. In the year since he acquired it, he cruised to local car shows on the weekends, not adding more than 100 miles to the odometer which reads a total just shy of 97,000 miles – actual miles. The recent owner always wanted a “one-off” model and found himself loving the way it was customized. He enjoyed the way this Ford cruised and had planned to iron out the exterior blemishes, replace the original powertrain and turn the Galaxie into a Resto Mod, but when he suddenly faced health problems, he quickly realized he wouldn't make it that far. He is the fourth owner, the clean Ohio title is in his name.
Wide, low and kinda sinister, this Ford lurks on the road with a striking two-tone arrangement in orange and black. The extent of previous body repairs is unknown, but the owner found a few rust bubbles on the edge of the hood and lower C-posts, as well as a crack in the paint of the rear wheel well. The front grill was painted black, the bumpers are colored in gray, the remaining chrome trim is in good condition. The passenger door glass shows a crack, a replacement comes with the car (also a second rear window). The Galaxie sits on Coys Wheels with flush inboard valve stems, wrapped in 245/45-ZR17 rubber.
The orange-on-black theme continues inside the car. There's orange carpeting, door panels and headliner, orange-on-black vinyl upholstery, with a bench seat up front and a foldable seat in the rear. The dashboard chrome was painted black, three (operating) Equus aftermarket gauges for water temperature, volts and oil pressure mounted under the dash. Some of the functions leave room for improvement. The heater box was removed. Horn, wipers and cigarette lighter have no function. The gas gauge gives more of an estimate and the E-brake could use some attention, too.
All-original under the hood, there's a 292 cu in. V8 with 185 hp mated to a column shifted 2-speed "Fordomatic”. The owner had plans to replace it with a modern unit for performance reasons, but the original still runs perfectly fine and just had some work done. The valve cover and manifold gaskets are new, and so is the power steering pump. The Galaxie has non-power assisted drum brakes all around, the rear suspension features air shocks. The undercarriage had been coated in the past and shows only light surface rust in a few spots.
The owner states the Ford cruises very smooth, with a soft shifting transmission and a raspy engine sound. The undercarriage looks overall very clean.
Make no mistake, this Galaxie is a purposely built show car. Function follows form is the key here. The owner never drove in rain, in the cold or even in snow, therefore never felt the urge of addressing the wipers or heater function. He made it very clear he wants to see his Ford in good hands of someone who appreciates the solid substance and the previously done work. He wants nothing more, but to get his money back out. Not a perfect car by any means, but an honest one, and surely a damn good looking one. 31,866 Galaxie 2dr Club Sedans were assembled for the one-off 1960 model year, making it an interesting sighting at any classic car show – are you ready to take a shot?
