Description:
This 1940 mercury coupe was commissioned by Walt Kaplan.he used to put on the annual rod and custom car show at the tacoma dome in Washington in the late 80's.The build was completed in September 1989. The story behind Walt's Merc shows
how a personal tragedy can be turned
into something positive and an inspi-
ration to others. Walt and his son had
originally planned to build the custom
together, but life is uncertain at best.
Walt and Joanie Kaplin's son, SGT
Robert S. Kaplin, along with 247 mem-
bers of the 101st Airborne (the fabled
"Screaming Eagles"
air assault unit)
perished in an airplane crash in 1985
Needless to say, the Merc was put on
the back burner.
Then Walt had an inspiration. Why
not turn the car into a first-class cus-
tom, dedicated not only to his son and
the 101st Airborne, but to all military personal.past present and future. future?
Street Rods By Denny, Inc., in Enum-
claw, Washington, did the mods where the chassis
was modified to accept Mustang II ifs
a small-block Chevy with matched
Turbo 350 transmission, and a Ford
eight-inch rear end. While the mechan-
icals were underway, Don Barnes Chopped the top 4½" into a Matranga-style hardtop.
Don Richardson molded the
fenders, rounded the corners, and performed other smoothie tricks.Denny Olson spent more hours than he'd like to admit working the body straight.
Walt made the coupe assessable to the U.S. military for dis-
play and parade purposes.
This car is nosed, peaked hood, filled grill center.frenched headlights, decked, shortened stainless desoto style bumpers.caddy sombreros Appletons skirts (the genuine article).two tone 63 caddie steering wheel, tilt column.49 Lincoln taillights.rear fenders molded in.car was bought from barret Jackson, then parked for 14 years!i just went thru the fuel with new electric fuel pump and carb, went theu brakes and put new tires on.electric fan and new aluminum radiator.ac blows cold.car as it was when walt left it.has a coupe scratches here and there
