1965 Pontiac GTO Convertible
In the muscle car world the GTO is a true icon. It was introduced in 1963 and was initially an optional trim level on the Pontiac Tempest before becoming is own model in later years. It is hard to talk muscle cars without bring up the classic GTO and many attribute them for kicking off the muscle car era with their first generation. Soon after all big domestic automakers would introduce competitors. The name was the idea of John DeLorean after being inspired by the Ferrari 250 GTO. In fact, a certain Pontiac employee actually took the proper steps to get the GTO homologated (certified) by the FIA in 1964 making it actually possible for the cars to be used in European sports car racing. This very clean 1965 is a beautifully frame off restored car and being convertible makes it among the more desirable GTOs out there. The Pontiac Historical Society has confirmed it's status as a true from the factory GTO that was originally built in Kansas. The current owner bough the car in 2000 and has cared for it extremely well. It has always been stored in a climate controlled garage and they use it as a fun unique dependable driver and cruise it around 1,000 miles per year. During the build the body was completely stripped to bare metal and then repainted in its original Mayfield Maze color. It pairs perfectly with the Black convertible top that has also been replaced and operates properly. The bumpers were all rechromed and the trim is in great condition as well. The glass is in great shape and has a slight tint. The car has American Racing Torq Thrust wheels with 15 inch BF Goodrich tires but the original Rally wheels with center caps do come with it.
The 389 motor originally came with a 4 barrel but had been changed to tri power. During the rebuild it was entirely gone through and done to stock Pontiac 389 tri power specifications. The engine compartment has a clean look and the car runs great. As mentioned previously it was built to be a nice dependable driver and it has no problem delivering. The original Muncie 4 speed shifts smoothly with no issues. The car has a great sound through dual Flowmaster exhaust that exit below the rear bumpers. It really is a comfortable car to cruise around in especially when you factory in the upgraded power disc brakes and converted power steering system. The springs, shocks, and sway bars were replaced throughout and it has air shocks in rear. Underneath the car is very solid and the frame was all sandblasted and epoxy painted.
The Black upholstery has been entirely redone and is in excellent condition. It wasn't originally a console car but an aftermarket console was added between the bucket seats. It has a Hurst shifter routed through the floor and the carpet is in just as good condition as the seats, door panel, and headliner. The dash has its stock layout and wears the original style wood grain trim. To avoid modifying it they installed a new Kenwood radio with CD changer in the glove box with new kick panel speakers. A second pod has been added below the dash for amp/oil/temp gauges. A polished tilt column and different wood grain wheel was added to allow for comfortable positioning for a taller person. The trunk of the car is all finished out as well and has plenty of storage space for all your car show gear.
This is a very well built car that was set up to look good at car shows while also providing a smooth comfortable drive to get there. For the purists out there the car does come with original parts like the steering column original wood grain wheel, rally wheels, drum brakes and more. These GTOs have always been popular and this one being a restored convertible makes it a great addition to any collection.
