Description:
1999 Porsche Boxster Convertible
For consignment, is a Boxster convertible from 1999. The name comes from its engine configuration of flat or a box, and the ..ster coming from roadster. This beauty has menacing black paint, polished wheels and is in great condition for the miles and age. A convertible that pulls no punches, and a power plant that floats like a butterfly and stings like a bee. This James Dean era Porsche inspired design is ready to drop its top and go for an exercise session on a winding road. Auf Wiedersehen.
Exterior
From the outside, the Gen 1 1999 Boxster features a front apron with two air-intakes on the sides. It was considered that the centrally-mounted one was useless. Indeed, it was useless unless it looked good. But the manufacturer discovered that later. The small air-intakes on the rear fenders were considered enough for the new engine range. A big improvement was the introduction of a glass rear window instead of the plastic one and on this car it is inserted into a black canvas convertible in very nice condition. A rounded oval shaped exhaust is placed in the middle of the rear apron which has a very bulbous appearance, along with rounded tail lights that wrap to the rear quarters, and dual rubber bumper pads in the center flanking the plate mounting. Above is a pop up at speed spoiler and the car is bathed in miles deep black paint. A few scuffs are on the lower portion of the car, possibly a losing encounter with a high curb. Also noted are chip offs throughout these areas as well. 18-inch cast 911 wheels adorn the corners and are wrapped in deeply treaded staggered width rubber. The wheels are slightly curbed on the fronts.
Interior
With top down we can examine every German engineered detail of the leather interior which is covered in striking Porsche charcoal anthracite black leather. European high back buckets with their "thin" styling and integrated headrests flank a padded and sculpted Porsche black center console. The dash is original and has a trio of overlapping gauges within an eyebrow overhang from the dash top to shade the instruments. In the central dash, a peppering of more Porsche black is on either side of the central cluster which contains an AM/FM/CD digital stereo, a backup camera screen and is Apple CarPlay capable. A small insert storage space, and a digital readout climate control panel just in front of the shift lever in the console. Clean black Porsche carpeting covers all the floors including the small rear stowage areas behind the buckets. In back is a dual paperclip styled roll bar with a new wind which would come in handy on this soft top if you had a wheels up incident!
Drivetrain
In the mid section towards the back of this car we see a 2.5 Liter flat 6 cylinder engine. It is fitted with EFI and a 5-speed manual transmission and 3.889 geared rear axle. All is looking good under this rear hood with the consignor stating it is a replacement engine which has 70K miles on it differentiating it from the cars mileage of an actual 106,575. Also our consignor notes that the IMS bearing and clutch were both replaced about 6,000 miles ago.
Undercarriage
Totally rust free due to the use of plenty of stamped steel floor pans and cast aluminum suspension parts. 4-wheel independent suspension along with 4-wheel disc brakes are seen in this clean and well preserved environment. Fisker dual exhaust makes the short trip from the engine to the back of the car and produces a wonderful Porsche exhaust note.
Drive-Ability
This car fired right up and on the test track it performed well...like a Porsche Boxster! It had wonderful neck snapping acceleration, rail like handling, bias free and short distance panic stopping, and all was working to greatness. The AC is not charged so it does not blow cold. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
A very reliable skate out just prior to the start of a new millennium. Faithfully maintained and enjoyed, this black blaster from the past is ready to perform and is just a hoot to drive. Turn the key and take it home...Schnell!
