The engine is the Z24 inline 4 and it runs good. There are a few oil leaks. I have a new oil pan gasket included but not installed. The rear brake drums are old but are in spec. I indexed the torsion bars to lift front end. while this works I was going to buy the new set from 4x4 parts. They have 30% more torsional strength. This truck has manual locking hubs that work smoothly as I greased them and the wheel bearings when I had the hubs apart doing the brakes. Everything on the dash works except the AC. Interior is very good for age. No cracks in windshield. This truck has a divorced transfer case for those in the know. Tires have 85% tread. The bad, truck bed is rough as well as passenger door. Parts can still be found. This truck will need an alignment as I've only driven it about 3 miles since work was completed to set the brakes. Exterior All anniversary cars wore the same coat of Light Pewter Metallic and Thunder Black, a bold and aggressive scheme that encircles the rocker panel in black delineated with a gold stripe that coordinated with the blades of the special 16-inch wheels wrapped in 50 series ZR rated tires. Long before Liberty editions became a thing, the rear wheel openings were widened by cladding and a streamlined rear wing turned upward to shed the wind. Notably, Turbo is broadcast in gold and large lettering on the rocker cladding and an offset hood scoop is another field mark of the turbo edition. Tinted translucent T-tops fit like puzzle pieces up top and a flush rear window and long, triangle quarter windows define the Z shape. Imperfections include several paint chips on the hood, C-pillar, and door, a scuff ahead of the left front wheel, rock chips and scratches ahead and behind the rear wheels, a busted tab on a fender liner and ding on the opening, multiple areas of chips and peeling of the gold stripe, (our consignor has a new stripe kit), flex cracks on front apron, chin scrapes, and various scuffs. Interior Smooth leather surrounds a pleated leather insert, all in black on the doors with the driver's side showing some looseness but both present cleanly. 50 is embroidered in gold on the black leather bucket seats and these too, are in nice condition. The quintessential 80's Japanese steering wheel is provided to the driver leading to a digital dashboard that looks right out of the movie TRON while to the right, silver topped small buttons control the AM/FM/Cassette radio and A/C controls. In true Z fashion, two gauges in the dash are canted to the pilot in grain black material that is clean and intact. The perfectly placed shifter is on your right, based in burlwood along with the bodysonic dials for the seats and other switchgear. Plush black carpet is protected by 50th anniversary mats and the package shelf and cargo area is also plush carpeted and clean.  Drivetrain The 3.0 liter inline 6 turbocharged engine in the busy bay could use a deeper detailing but it's all there in its red colored glory. It's rated at 200 horsepower and mated to a 5-speed manual transmission that routes power to the rear wheels and 3.54 gears.   Undercarriage Age patina is prevalent with some typical surface rust and metal oxidation, but otherwise clean and dry underneath, although some seepage is noted at the rear differential. The knuckles are clean and boots intact. Four wheel power disc brakes are on board and the single exhaust flows through original equipment on its way to twin ANSA chrome tips in back. Suspension consists of Macpherson struts in front and coil springs in the back.  Drive-Ability The Z's characteristic ride is delivered by this survivor, and that means excellent handling with a driver focused cockpit, nice visibility, and good power.We're riding with the t-tops in place, but can imagine the open air experience enhancing an already fine driving car. We note the horn is not working but all other functions on board work as they should. With its long pointed nose, short sloping rear, long wheelbase, and flat rear fascia, the shape is undeniably distinctive, ever present on the roads in the 70's and 80's as daily drivers, they are now highly desirable collectibles. This one presents in original condition with areas that will need some TLC, and other parts that will need nothing. Exterior Brown was still quite popular in the early 80's, evidenced by the Light Brown Metallic on our car which even colors the covers of the inset headlights, a key field mark that adds to its uniqueness. A ribbed rocker panel trim piece adds some contrast as does the polished B-pillar trim and 14-inch wheels. The long hood is enhanced by a center bulge flanked by black vents matching the plastic cowl grille. From behind, there's no mistaking the 3 color tail lights over a straight bumper and at the base of the flat hatch window. Side body molding is a remnant of the 70's and 80's and prevented door dings, but also cut through the smooth panels of the midline. And the panels on this car are straight, the paint is nice, and the metalwork is in good shape. Where it shows its age is on black painted parts such as the door handle surrounds, the emblems, and the front window trim. There's also clear coat and oxidation issues on the wheels, but from 20 feet, you couldn't tell. Interior Beige and tan door panels are nice compliments to the exterior brown are in decent condition with some light, general patina. The bucket seats have aftermarket covers and so do the 2+2 seats in back. The brown steering wheel is in great shape and wears a "Z" emblem, all leading to a sizable instrument cluster with essential gauges and idiot lights in a symmetrical descending pattern. More toward the middle, we find additional gauges, (and digital clock), coved and canted towards the driver in a race car inspired design. Below that, the standard A/C panel and a nickel backed AM/FM/Cassette radio panel, framed in brown plastic. On the dash itself, a fitted cover protects the sun exposed surface that has some telltale cracks. In the center console the shifter takes its place and once again, it's metal over plastic. The beige carpet is nice in the footwells outside of the brown rubber mats, but in the cargo areas it's a bit soiled. But this cargo area also has loose and cracked material on its walls and some staining of the plastic, along with some wear on the weatherstripping. The headline on this solid roof car is in good condition. Drivetrain With a body matched cam cover in the engine bay, we find the driver quality 2.8 liter SOHC inline 6 cylinder rated at 145 horsepower. Fuel is regulated by the Bosch L-Jetronic EFI system and a Jatco L3N 3-speed automatic transmission is behind it, sending power to the rear wheels and 3.54 gears. Power brakes are onboard as front discs and rear drums. Undercarriage Aged and dirty, but we've seen worse. We note some oil on the oil pan, some dampness near a brake line, general grime on the knuckles and rear diff, and both boots of the rack and pinion system are torn and detached. A single exhaust carries a stock style muffler before wrapping behind the gas tank and finding a chrome tip. Independent MacPherson strut suspension is supplied front and rear. Drive-Ability It was the daily driver that felt like a race car, and it still does! The low seating position, the long nose ahead, and that rear wheel drive is a recipe for good times. The car is a quick starter and the automatic does a good job at putting the power down, propelling our Z through its pace where it tracks straight and handles great, even with 70 series tires. All functions work as they should and we steer this aerodynamic classic back to the showroom. Thx to Hagerty, May 2022 For consignment, a 1972 Datsun 240Z with a title verified 94,172 actual miles, and since Datsuns are known to "run like tops," that's mid level mileage and certainly low for a car that's more than 50 years old. Exterior Medium Blue coats the car and the jacket is augmented by a white stripe that covers the slight bulge on the hood, thereby accentuating it. That stripe continues over the roof and onto the decklid. The front and rear both wear aftermarket cladding that adds a long chin spoiler to the front and a lower valance in the back. It gives the illusion the car is lower than it is, but the spell is broken when seen in profile as the rocker panels are standard configuration and the car sits on 14-inch wheels with 65 series tires. A set (4) of Centerline Wheels are also included and are shown in the pictures. The recessed headlights are classic Z cars, posted at the end of a long and narrow nose, a cabin that cants reward, and a short, sloping tail that ends abruptly, all lending to a well balanced car some say ahead of its time. The black rear light panel is a nice touch and the only imperfection we note on the exterior are some scrapes on that lowered chin. Interior Japanese efficiency is expressed in the simple black door panels that waste no material with overwrought designs or contouring and they're in great shape. While the door is open, we note some surface rust along the rim of the doorjamb, perhaps where rubber seals have trapped some moisture. The tall black vinyl bucket seats are pure Z with their four buttons and we note some blemishes on the passenger door. The steering wheel shows some patina and is wearing an older aftermarket cover on the rim. Ahead of it, two main gauge front and center for the driver's observation and to the right of them, three more gauges relaying five bits of information including the time. The center stack looks good and houses vent controls and an AM/FM radio. A patina clad center console is home to the shifter, wrapped in a laced leather boot and the entire floor is covered in black looped carpet that appears to be in decent condition. The same material covers the rear cargo area in clean condition. Drivetrain Under the reverse opening hood, we find a clean 2.4 liter inline six cylinder pumping out a respectable 138 horsepower. It's fueled by dual 2-barrel Weber carburetors and in true sports car fashion, the power is directed to the rear wheels and 3.70 gears. Power brakes are onboard with discs in front and drums in the rear. Undercarriage This is driver quality underneath with surface rust on all of the usual components including the driveshaft, exhaust, brake components, and frame. We note no leaks underneath and no invasive rust of concern. Headers lead to an exhaust which encounters a stock style muffler before heading back where the valance makes room for the tailpipe. Drive-Ability These sporty cabins were made for the street, but have a race car vibe. Maybe it's the sitting position and that long nose out front, but it makes you wonder if Z stands for "zoom zoom", (sorry Mazda). The six cylinder carries us onto the test loop with confidence. The ride is great with fantastic handling, straight tracking, and visibility that takes a few minutes of practice without the right side mirror, which was the standard configuration. But it's got good acceleration for a little car. We do note that the radio is not working but all other functions operate as they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase. Hagerty is a pretty reliable source for collector market values and Z cars have been on the rise for quite some time. When we're fortunate enough to represent one here, it elicits a response from most people who walk by.
