Built to celebrate the life of John’s late friend James, this ‘69 Pontiac Firebird has had plenty of emotion propelling it along a path of improvement in this latest chapter of its life. After James passed, this former project of his found its way into the hands of his brothers, who planned to revitalize this car.
However, their busy schedules prevented them from acting on this and eventually had to move it from their garage. When John got wind of this, he jumped at the opportunity and decided to give this Firebird, better known as Murderbird, a new home.
James had given this menacing car a lot of love during their time together. He retrofitted the rear with a Ridetech four-link setup, added mini tubs and disc brakes, installed a built 350 with independent throttle bodies, and linked that motor to a sturdy T56 transmission.
That would be enough for some, but John’s committed himself to perfecting this car—after all, James deserves the best. In recent months, John’s started rewiring the car and aims to convert the engine over to Holley Sniper electronic fuel injection—complete with their ignition box and distributor for easy operation. Additionally, he sees the interior as a little lackluster, so he’s aiming to add a fifth-generation Camaro center console to spruce things up a bit.
There’s a little left before John’s content with his work and returns the car to James’ family. To keep tabs on this commemoration to a dear friend’s life, please follow Murderbird’s build thread.
