Besides all the glitter and glam, the Ol’ Skool (Skool is correct) Roundup, which is several hundred cars and trucks strong, stands as a reminder of how the car hobby began. But a closer look reveals that these cars, which some people dismiss as something that might be discarded in the junk pile at Sanford and Son, are almost always creative and innovative.

Their style was developed during the late 1940s and early 1950s, when soldiers coming home from World War II wanted cars but didn’t have money. They got their hands on what they could, old cars mostly, took the fenders off, cut the tops off, bolted on big wheels and tires and installed exposed exhaust pipes along the sides. Some cars were painted, some were finished in primer and some were left the way they were found. They were cheap to buy and easy to fix; most had Ford flathead V-8 engines. but they almost always sounded faster than they were.

They were called hot rods… Enjoy the pics!
