Land Speed racing legend Fred Lobello passed away on February 23, 2015. They say he was in good spirits and talking till the end. No information on if or when the service will be. I got word from Glen Barrett that Fred Lobello has passed away at 93. It was much more expected but still a shock to me. I have known Fred for over 40 years and enjoyed every minute I spent with him. He was once the machinist for Paul Shieffer while they were in San Diego. He later built a complete machine shop in his garage and had all the equipment to do whatever you needed. He did the machine work on the Riley heads for Vesco. George Riley owed Vesco money and Vesco got all the patterns when George died. Fred would receive the raw castings and finish machine them. Great guy with so many stories to tell. Last saw him at B’ville in 2013. Just an all around good egg. Here are some pix of Fred, one with me and him at the Hot Rod 65th party when he was in the Save the Salt booth and then Fred at B’ville in 2013 plus an old shot of him in Paul Shieffer’s car on the salt. Fred Lobello’s service; will be 1pm, March 12, 2015 and here is the address for those of you that wish to attend or send condolences. Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 2725 55th Street, San Diego, Ca. (619) 262-2435. I will be in attendance, It was also suggested that a remembrance in Fred’s name could be made to Save The Salt also. Fred Lobello started going to B’ville in 1949 and was what they called a 49niner (or one of a group that was the first to race on the Salt Flats under the banner of the SCTA/BNI). He was a great guy, great friend, and it is a terrible loss to our racing family. Doug McHenry
