Rest in Peace George Poteet: Legendary Speed Demon of Bonneville Salt Flats

George Poteet, renowned for his fearless exploits at the historic Bonneville Salt Flats, achieved near-legendary status with a record-setting run of 470.015 mph, edging remarkably close to the elusive 500 mph mark. Hailing from rural Mississippi, he blazed a trail as the first in his family to pursue higher education and later established a prosperous nutritional supplements business. Once his children were educated, Poteet annually embarked on a pilgrimage to Utah’s iconic salt flats to pursue his passion for speed.

Against the backdrop of vast white expanses and distant mountain vistas, Poteet maneuvered his iconic Speed Demon—a sleek golden rocket barely wider than himself—to a multitude of accolades. His dedicated team not only set new benchmarks in the Southern California Timing Association’s revered time trials but also earned acclaim for their professionalism and approachability in the pits. With over 13 SCTA Bonneville records and six FIA world records under their belt, the Speed Demon crew solidified Poteet’s enduring legacy in the realm of speed racing.

Beyond his pursuit of speed, Poteet left an indelible mark on car culture by championing emerging talents in custom car building rather than merely collecting exclusive supercars. His philanthropy resonated widely, benefiting mechanics, builders, and automotive enthusiasts worldwide.

George Poteet’s impact transcended his impressive speed records; he elevated the essence of grassroots racing and made an everlasting impression on the automotive landscape. Though George Poteet has since passed away, his remarkable legacy continues to inspire future generations of speed enthusiasts and car aficionados alike.
