Ron Dunn Ford Restoration Nears Completion

For the past year Steve’s Auto Restorations in Portland, Oregon has been hard at work restoring the Valley Custom Shop built Ron Dunn 1950 Ford otherwise known as the Monte Carlo. The car debuted in 1952 at the LA Motorama where it won First in Class and then went on to win First Place in the Custom Coupe class at the Oakland Roadster Show in 1953. It has been featured in many publications and was labeled as the #1 Custom of the Year by Hop Up magazine in February of 1953. Later in 1958 following a re-styling, the car was again recognized in Custom Cars Magazine as one of “The 10 Best” customs.

The car at one point suffered a side-swipe type accident resulting in a re-customizing by Valley Custom Shop in 1956/1957. Prior to the current restoration, much discussion went into whether or not the restoration would follow the first or the second version. Steve ultimately decided to restore the second version feeling that it would be sacrilegious to dispose of “Valley Custom Shop” sheet metal work, or to hang it on the wall, only to then shape new S.A.R. sheet metal to mimic the first version. Through countless magazine articles, photos, and personal accounts, the crew at Steve’s has been meticulously restoring this influential custom back to its deserved glory. Extra attention has been given to not alter or “over-restore” the hours of metal work put into this car by customizers Neil Emory and Clayton Jensen.

The goal all along has been to accurately restore the car and preserve the history and legacy of Valley Custom Shop. Given Steve’s extensive background in concours restorations, we are confident that the end result will be one that many will enjoy and appreciate. The restoration is currently in the final stages and is on track to be displayed at the 2015 Grand National Roadster Show this coming January. Don’t miss an opportunity to see this award-winning custom’s return to the spot light!
