The History of Drag Racing – The Quarter Mile Foundation's Project 1320

For many of us at Hotrod Hotline, we live life a quarter mile at a time, but not too long ago, the idea of pitting two machines against each other in an all out race didn’t exist. Thanks to a few pioneers, the sport of drag racing was born and has become more popular than ever, but few people know the real history of drag racing.

The Quarter Mile Foundation has set out to create a documentary film to “capture the history of drag racing and the performance automotive aftermarket that spawned from it.” This effort to collect and share the history of drag racing with a new generation is called Project 1320.

Project 1320 needs your help to collect interviews and stories from the remaining pioneers of drag racing. “From the onset, we have known we were in a ‘race against time’— 60 years have gone by with no real recollection of how this great sport got started. Our greatest concern is to capture the stories and personal perspectives of the legends of the sport and the industry who are still living,” says Traci Hrudka, chairman of Quarter Mile Foundation. “We have lost a tremendous number of these people over the years, and time is running out to capture those oral histories as well as the recollections from family and friends of the ones we have lost. If we ever want to do this, now is the time!”

You can help the Quarter Mile Foundation achieve its goal of creating the most complete and accurate compilation of drag racing history by donating to Project 1320. Go HERE to learn more about Project 1320 and donate to their mission.
