Hop Up RPM Nationals

The 1st ever RPM NATIONALS, sponsored by Hop Up Magazine, PF Flyers and Uppercut Deluxe is in the books... and according to everyone in attendance, a big hit, the start of an annual event that will draw enthusiasts from across the nation and beyond.

The brainchild of Justin Baas, Mason Dyer and Russ Hare, the vision became a reality under beautiful sunny skies on a historical ranch landmark in the sleepy community of Santa Margarita, conveniently located on the central coastal area of California. Upwards of a hundred entries and several hundred spectators descended on the race site, AKA the ranch airstrip.

Loosely arranged, with 4-bangers in two classes, stock and modified, Flathead V8’s also in the respective classes, stock or modified... All of the entrants had to be period correct cars. When it came to the racing action, it was often a grudge match, buddy against buddy, banger vs. Flathead be damned... this was a fun day! Over and over drivers were testing and running; they couldn’t get enough of the action. When the tire smoke cleared it was a banger that went home ‘king of the hill,' taking on all comers.

In addition to the action on the strip, there were many period correct hot rods and customs lining the pit area, as well as a swap meet set up against the vintage train tracks. Yeah, there is a vintage train running at the ranch as well.

The sponsors had canopies set up by the entry gate, offering their wares, as well as information to all regarding the event and plans for the future. This was a very well organized event, and we certainly look forward to 2018 and what it brings... Hope to see you there!
